Particles are locked in a regular pattern and vibrate about fixed positions.
A constant outside pressure pushes the lid down, as the air does on a real sample. The lid rests on a solid or liquid and rises when the sample boils. Choosing Solid cools the sample gently through its freezing point so the particles have time to line up into a crystal.
Kinetic energy sets the temperature. Potential energy comes from the forces between particles: it is most negative when they are held tightly together and rises as they are pulled apart during melting and boiling.
