THE FIELD LAB / STEER A CHARGE

Push it. Bend it.
Spin it up!

Fire electrons, protons and alpha particles through electric and magnetic fields.
Then build a velocity selector and a cyclotron.

A model is an explanation, not a photograph.

Every track is calculated step by step from the force \(q\boldsymbol{E} + q\boldsymbol{v} \times \boldsymbol{B}\) using real charges, masses, voltages and fields, so the shapes and sizes are right. The plates, fields and tracks are drawn to scale in centimeters (the cyclotron in tens of centimeters), but the particles are drawn enormously larger than they really are.

The motion is slowed down billions of times: an electron crosses these plates in a few nanoseconds. Each track is replayed at a speed that makes it easy to follow, so different particles are not shown at their true relative speeds. Gravity is ignored because it is far too weak to matter, and so are the forces between particles in the beam.

The fields are perfectly uniform inside the plates or the shaded region and zero outside; real fields spread out at the edges. The cyclotron is non-relativistic, its dees have no deflector to steer the beam out, and the particle starts from rest at the center.
